Career Speakers!
We are again having career speakers at New Salem High School this year. Career speakers provide students an opportunity to obtain information about an occupation and career opportunities from someone who is actually involved in that career field.

Our first speaker of the year was Branica Doll. Branica is doing an internship at the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her chosen occupation is clinical laboratory science. This occupation is also known as medical technology. However, clinical laboratory science is the new more appropriate title for this occupation.

Some interesting things I found out about clinical laboratory science from Branica Doll are that they are the ones who check for various illnesses and diseases such as hepatitis, HIV, cultures for strep-throat, and they check cells under the microscope to see if there are cancer cells, etc.

It was interesting to note that beginning salaries range from about $ 29,000.00 in North Dakota to about $ 35,000.00 at Mayo Clinic and about $ 40,000.00 in Oklahoma City. Some employers will pay between $ 5,000.00 to $ 15,000.00 in sign-up bonuses. In addition, some employers will pay up to $ 5,000.00 in relocation expenses.

Some employers may also offer to help students pay back college loans upon signing a 5 or 6-year contract.

Thanks to Branica Doll for taking her time and sharing with us her insights and knowledge about becoming a clinical laboratory science technologist. She also shared share some of the things that influenced her decision to go into clinical laboratory science.

Thanks to Dr. Lanny Gabbert for allowing us into his chemistry classroom.

We are indeed lucky to have so many local community members who share their time and energy to help others. When I arrange to have career speakers come to the school to talk to students, community members are welcome to join us. Please let us know in advance so that we can plan accordingly.
