National Merit Semifinalist!
New Salem High School has a National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist! Congratulations Bryce Tellmann! Bryce is in an elite group of students in North Dakota. He is one of North Dakotaís top 40 highest scoring students on last yearís Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Bryce is the first student to become a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program in the seven years that I have served New Salem High School.
Bryce has been invited to continue in the National Merit Scholarship Program competition. Bryce will now complete the application process for further competition and take the SAT. Thanks to Bryceís teachers and parents for helping Bryce in this great achievement!
Way to go Bryce and best of luck in competing to become a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist!
This yearís National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test will be administered at New Salem High School on Wednesday, October 17, 2007. Sophomores and juniors are allowed to take this test. However, only juniors are allowed to compete in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended students and semifinalists will be notified in September of 2008.
The PSAT/NMSQT consists of assessing students in 3 areas. These areas are: critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills. In order for students to do well on these tests, students must challenge themselves by taking challenging high school courses and learn all they can in their school courses and especially focus in on the 3 areas listed above. I have Student Guides to the PSAT/NMSQT in my office. I will also distribute these to interested junior and sophomore students.
Some students signed up for the PSAT/NMSQT last spring. I have ordered materials and I have slots for a few additional students. The cost of the exam is $ 13.00. I have received a few fee waivers that are based on financial need for juniors. If any additional sophomores or juniors wish to sign up, please see me ASAP.
