North Dakota Scholars Scholarship Recipient!
New Salem High School has a North Dakota Scholars Program Scholarship recipient – Bryce Tellmann! Bryce is the first New Salem student to receive this scholarship in the seven years that I have served New Salem High School. Bryce you have certainly demonstrated that our curriculum provided by teachers at New Salem High School provides a quality education that make it possible for students to excel in academics as well as athletics, music, career and technical education programs, etc!
To compete for this, Bryce took the ACT last year as a junior. Last week Peggy Wipf of the North Dakota University System notified Bryce that he was one of the top scoring students in North Dakota. Bryce is the son of Allan and Debra Tellmann of New Salem.
The North Dakota State Legislative Assembly provides funding to the North Dakota University System to provide a few (about 20) tuition free scholarships to the highest scoring juniors who take the ACT. This is an effort by the North Dakota State Legislature to financially reward and keep some top students here in North Dakota.
The North Dakota Scholars Program Scholarship competition is available again this year. So, this year’s juniors who wish to try to compete for this scholarship must take the ACT during one of the 4 ACT Testing dates between December 2007 and June 2008. The actual ACT test dates and registration deadlines are listed below.
ACT Test Date ....... Registration Deadline
Dec. 8, 2007 .......... Nov. 2, 2007
Feb. 9, 2008 .......... Jan. 4, 2008
April 12, 2008 ........ Mar. 7, 2008
June 14, 2008 ........ May 9, 2008
Anyone can take the ACT. The youngest student I know who took the ACT was an 8th grade student. This student also went on to win the North Dakota Scholars Scholarship himself a few years back.
Bryce became a National Merit Scholarship Corporation Semifinalist last month. This month he is a North Dakota Scholars Program Scholarship recipient. Way to go Bryce!
College Admission, Placement, and Scholarships!
Colleges use ACT scores in the admissions process. Colleges also use the ACT scores to help in determining proper course placement of students. In addition, many scholarships require an ACT score as one of the criteria in selecting scholarship recipients.
I hope that every junior who is planning to attend a college or trade school in the fall of 2009 takes the ACT during one of the ACT test dates listed above. In order for students to do their best on the ACT, students need to take challenging math, science, and English classes. In turn they must do their best in every class taken in high school. One additional tool available to our students is “TestGEAR.” This is available on the http://www.Bridges.com website. Students need to remember their portfolio name and password. Students who forget their password can get them again from me. Good luck to all students when taking the ACT!
On October 4th, each New Salem High School sophomore took a sophomore version of the ACT called the PLAN. The PLAN gives students a feel for what the ACT test is like. As in the ACT, the PLAN also includes an interest inventory. This interest inventory will provide each student with placement on the World-of-Work Map. When we get the PLAN results, I will interpret the results to the sophomores.

Way to go Bryce Tellmann!
