Financial Aid Night
This academic year’s Financial Aid Night is scheduled for Tuesday, January 4, 2005. We will meet in the Interactive TV (ITV) Room at New Salem High School. The speaker will be Sandy Klein, Director of Financial Aid at Dickinson State University. The financial aid information that Mrs. Klein will present applies to any college a student attends as all colleges utilize the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). She will present an explanation of every question on the 8-page application. In order for a student to access federal funds in subsidized and unsubsidized federal student loans, PELL Grants, SEOG Grants, and state grants, the FAFSA application must be completed. FAFSA forms are available after January 1, 2005 and will be available the night of the workshop.
This workshop is particularly for parents of students who will attend college next fall. This workshop is also for any community members contemplating attending college next year – or in the future. Mrs. Klein will explain the application process so that the application is properly completed and so that an applicant will receive the appropriate financial aid package from the college. If you have any questions, please contact me.
College Admissions Representatives
College and university representatives from across North Dakota and a few from out of state schedule visits at both New Salem and Hebron High Schools each year. Community members who are interested in visiting with a college admissions representative are also invited to attend the informational meetings at the high school.
A college admissions representative from the University of North Dakota will visit New Salem High School at 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday, November 30, 2004. If you are interested in attending please let me know ahead of time so that we can plan accordingly.
PSAT/NMSQT, PLAN, and ASVAB Assessments
In October, we administered the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) to juniors and interested sophomores. We also administered the PLAN (sophomore version of the ACT) to all sophomores. We have received those results. I will distribute and interpret the results of these tests next week in school. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test results were distributed and interpreted last month to the juniors who took the test.
North Dakota State Assessments
We finished assessing all students in grades 3-8, and 11 with the North Dakota Reading and Mathematics Assessments. The assessment materials were returned to CTB/McGraw-Hill for scoring. We hope to receive the results for each student on North Dakota’s standards and benchmarks either in May or during the summer. The primary difference this year from previous year’s results is that individual students and New Salem Public Schools will no longer receive norm-referenced scores that compare how individual students and New Salem Public Schools scored compared to the rest of the country.
Thanks to the teachers for all their work in teaching and assessing the students, and thanks especially to the students for doing their best. This year the percentage of students who must score at or above the proficient level will increase over last year. Hopefully, New Salem Public Schools will again make adequate yearly progress.
If you have any questions on career, counseling, or assessment topics, please contact me at New Salem High School at 843-7610, at Hebron High School at 878-4442, or at my residence at 222-3222.
Have an excellent Thanksgiving Holiday!
