Way To Go Holsteins!
Congratulations to the Girls Cross Country Team! Second in the state is awesome! This fine performance demonstrates the dedication and perseverance that these girls have. The team seems like an extended family as they gather in the high school commons area in preparation for their after school run.
Congratulations to Coach “Iron Man” Brent Lauf on being named “Coach of the Year!” Second year in a row – you sure are doing something right. Keep up the great effort.
Team, way to make yourselves, your coach, and New Salem High School look great!
Family Financial Aid Night
We will conduct a Family Financial Aid Night on Monday, November 28, 2005. The session will begin at 7:00 P.M. in the high school ITV Room. Our guest speaker will be Sandy Klein. Mrs. Klein is the Director of Financial Aid at Dickinson State University. She will explain the entire Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the form that must be completed in order for a student to access federal funds. This includes PELL Grants, Supplemental Opportunity Education Grants (SEOG) Grants, and state grants. The FAFSA is also required for students to receive various subsidized and unsubsidized federal student loans.
This workshop is for the parents of this year’s seniors who are planning on attending college next year. In addition, any community members who are thinking of attending college in the near future and/or who would like to find out about the financial aid process are welcome to attend.
Last year each person who attended was able to enter their name or their son or daughters name into a $ 250.00 scholarship competition. The winners were drawn at random. We had a state winner at Hebron High School last year. It happened that both parents and the student all attended and so her name went into the drawing 3 times. I haven’t heard yet if the North Dakota Directors of Financial Aid will have the same scholarship competition this year.
This is the time of year to complete scholarship applications for college scholarships. In order to do this, students must first apply to the college for admission. Then students must normally complete a college scholarship application. The college will then examine high school transcripts and ACT scores to determine which college scholarships – if any – that an applicant qualifies for. Some colleges have already begun to award scholarships while some do not start to award scholarships until December 1st. Usually, the higher the grades and the better the ACT score, the more likely a student is to receive a scholarship.
There are also college scholarships for students in college. One place to check for scholarships is in the financial aid office. Two other sources are within the student’s major department and the college counseling office. Of course college students can also access http://www.fastweb.com. Fastweb.com will do a scholarship search for high school and college students both.
