Violence Prevention Activities
A violence prevention unit was presented to 7th and 8th grade students at New Salem High School. Some handouts were distributed to each student followed with discussions on various types of violence that can occur in schools. What does physical, verbal, and emotional abuse look like in school as well as communication traps that we can get ourselves into? These topics were discussed along with a discussion of empathy. A voluntary pledge sheet was distributed and most of the students signed and returned a pledge to promote respect throughout the school. These signed pledges will be placed in the student’s career portfolio at school.

In addition for the third consecutive year, Katie Fleck and Dani Nilsen presented a Bullying Prevention unit to the 7th and 8th grade students at New Salem High School in conjunction with Violence Prevention Week. Katie Fleck and Dani Nilsen have an energetic, fast-paced presentation that helps students see and understand some of the harmful effects of bullying as well as some ideas of what to do if you are the recipient of violence and bullying. The title of their presentation is “Small Town Bullies.” If your group would like to see their state and national gold medal award winning performance of “Small Town Bullies”, please contact them. They just may accept the invitation!

I’m asking for you both to present again next year to the 7th and 8th grade classes. Thanks to both Dani and Katie for your time, effort, and leadership you exhibit by doing this. New Salem students and community are better off because of your efforts!

On Tuesday April 19, 2005, Careerware conducted a Webinar (internet Seminar) on TestGEAR. TestGEAR is a test preparation program on the internet. The Bank of North Dakota is exploring the feasibility of purchasing TestGEAR for all high schools in the state for the next academic year. Jesse Bateman, Keith Jacobson, and I participated in this Webinar. Thanks to Jesse Bateman and Keith Jacobson for participating with me in this Webinar. TestGEAR would provide for those who use it the potential for identifying their strengths and weaknesses on the ACT. In addition, it will also provide lessons for improving on those specific weaknesses so a student can increase their scores on the ACT.

TestGEAR also has an administrative component that has implications for high school teachers in the identification of strengths and deficits in instructional materials. I would like to see the Bank of North Dakota follow through on this project. It will benefit our students who want to improve their ACT test scores. Increases in test scores have a direct benefit in the quest for scholarships.

Career Development Advisory Committee Meeting
The New Salem, Hebron, and Glen Ullin Career Development Advisory Committee conducted its spring meeting in April. We met via the Polycom units in each school. New Salem committee members present were: Allison Klemisch, Keith Jacobson, Roger Klemisch, and myself. Thanks to the committee members for their voluntary participation and feedback on this advisory committee. It certainly is appreciated.
