To CLEP or not to CLEP
What is CLEP?
CLEP is an acronym for the College Level Examination Program that is conducted by the College Board.
What is the reason to take CLEP Tests?
There are many reasons for taking CLEP tests. The primary reason is to get college credit for what you learned in high school. Another is so that one doesnít need to pay the much higher tuition, buy the books, attend classes, do all of the homework and take the tests to get college credit.
Who can take CLEP Tests?
Typically high school juniors and seniors can take CLEP tests. The best time to take a CLEP test is immediately after having taken the respective high school course. For example the best time to take the CLEP chemistry test is immediately after taking high school chemistry. Anyone can take a CLEP test as long as the person has not enrolled in or taken that particular college level class. Individual colleges may vary on who can take CLEP tests.
Can I study for the CLEP Tests?
Yes, you can study for the CLEP tests. Books stores as well as test preparation materials can be ordered online directly from the College Boardís website as well as from other publishers of test prep materials. However, the best way to study for CLEP tests is to take and do well in the respective high school classes.
What happens if I do not get a passing score on the CLEP test?
If you donít get a passing score on a CLEP test you do not get college level credit.
How much does it cost to take CLEP Tests?
Each CLEP test will cost $ 72 before July 1, 2010. After July 1, 2010 the cost will increase to $77 per test. In addition, each local test center will charge a fee for administering the exam. This additional fee is usually about $ 15.00.
Where can I take CLEP Tests?
Locally, CLEP tests can be taken at either Bismarck State College or the University of Mary.
Do all colleges accept CLEP tests for credit?
Most colleges but not all colleges accept CLEP credit. Prior to taking a CLEP test, contact the college you plan to attend and ask about their policy regarding CLEP credit.

More information can be obtained from the College Boardís website at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html,. To register for CLEP tests, please call the test center at the University of Mary at 335- 8050 or at Bismarck State College at 224-5658.
