North Dakota State Assessment Results
New Salem Public School received the results of the North Dakota State Assessment that our students in grades 3-8 and 11 took in October and November of 2005. We were happy to receive our studentsí results this early. This is the first time in the past 5 years that we have received the results before the end of the school year in which the tests were administered. Below are the 2005-2006 North Dakota State Assessment results for North Dakota and New Salem Public School.

The percentages listed above are the percentages of students who scored at the proficient and advanced levels on the North Dakota State Assessment. One observation is that our students scored above the state average in mathematics in every grade that was assessed. New Salem students scored higher than the state average in 10 of the areas and lower than the state average in 4 areas.

What is most striking to me about New Salem Public Schoolís assessment results is how our 7th and 11th grade students performed! As you can see these students scored well above the state averages!

Congratulations to the students for scoring so well on the North Dakota State Assessment! Thanks to the teachers for doing a great job of teaching our students. Also thanks to the parents for supporting the teachersí efforts at home by checking to see that students make a good effort in completing their homework. Our students do so well not just in academics, athletics, and other school activities, but as responsible citizens too! The education of our children and helping them prepare for their futures and realizing their dreams certainly requires a team effort by everyone!

How Do New Salem Public School Students Score Compared To The Rest Of The Country?
Our students do well compared to the rest of North Dakota but how do we compare to the rest of the country? This is the second year that we are unable to answer this question. The reason is that we no longer receive norm-referenced score results on the North Dakota State Assessment. In other words, we no longer are receiving results with which to compare individual students to the rest of the country. In addition, neither are we able to compare New Salem Public Schools to the rest of the country.

Comparing our students to the rest of the nation is an important indicator of student achievement. I wish our state education leaders would value this indicator of student achievement for our students, parents, teachers, and community.

If you have any questions on the North Dakota State Assessment results for New Salem Public Schools, please contact either Mr. Gordon Davis, superintendent or Dr. Gaylynn L. Becker, district assessment coordinator.

Students Receive State Assessment Reports
Students in grades 7, 8, and 11 received a copy of their North Dakota State Assessment results. I explained each report and each score on the reports with the students and each student placed an original copy in their Career Planning Portfolio. Parents should have received a copy of their students North Dakota State Assessment results last week. Those who didnít receive them last week will receive them shortly. If you have any questions on your childís state assessment report, please ask either your student or contact me at New Salem High School. Thanks for your cooperation and partnership in helping New Salem Public Schools deliver the best education possible for our students!

New Salem Students Do Excel!
New Salem Public Schoolís students again demonstrate that our school delivers a good quality education for our students. I think what is critical for the education of our students is not the size of the school but rather:

1. Students who try to do their best in both academics and all activities;

2. Teachers who care about students and who deliver a good, sound, and challenging curriculum;

3. Parental support who see that students do their homework and come to school ready to learn; and of course

4. Community support of the school and our students.

I see all of the above in New Salem. Lets all keep up the great effort!
