Seventh Grade Career Planning Portfolios
We have a 7th grade class that is full of enthusiastic students who are interested in preparing themselves for their future. I recently visited the 7th grade students a few times during Mrs. Olheisersís English class to help get students started on their individual Career Planning Portfolios.

The New Salem Career Planning Program among other things includes activities that help students identify their interests, and abilities in order to begin the process of identifying occupations and careers related to the individual students interests and abilities. Another component is to help students see the relationship between school and the world of work. These 7th grade students identified three things that are important in school, out of school, and are needed in order to get good references. These three things were:
1. Be on time
2. Work hard
3. Have a positive attitude.
Implementation of the Career Planning Portfolios is one of the 25 things I like best about my current position.

State Tournaments
Congratulations to the New Salem/Center Wrestling Team! 8 members of the team participated in the State Wrestling Tournament. Hard work often pays off in the end. Way to go!

Congratulations also to the New Salem Girls Basketball Team! After taking first in the district, they took also took first in the region tournament last week in an exciting, nail biting, foot stomping, jump up in the air game-winning 2 second shot! What a roller coaster for the old ticker.

The team was behind but they didnít give up! Neither did the fans give up! It reminds me of not giving up in our own lives. Keep working toward that goal. Iím sure looking forward to watching them play at the State Basketball Tournament in Jamestown. Win or lose, just play your best!

Congratulations to Coach Jerome Slag for receiving Region 5 Coach of the Year! Good luck to the coaches and the players at the state tourney!

Career Speakers
We have two guest speakers coming in to talk about career opportunities in the area of respiratory therapy and diesel mechanics. Beth Hughes of St. Alexius Medical Center will be in to provide a presentation about respiratory therapy to students in Mr. Gums Chemistry class.

Jessica Pulver of Butler Machinery will provide a presentation on an internship opportunity through Butler Machineryís Internship program in Mr. Feiringís Vocational Agriculture IV Class on March 10th. A student who is accepted into the internship program will alternately attend North Dakota State College of Science one semester and intern Ė with pay Ė the next semester until completion of the program. Of course, the student would work at Butler Machinery upon completion of the program. This is a joint venture of Butler Machinery and North Dakota State College of Science.

Students who are not in these classes but wish to listen to these speakers will need to make appropriate arrangements.

North Dakota Counseling Association Annual Conference
I recently attended the North Dakota Counseling Associationís Annual Conference in Bismarck. There were many excellent presentations from counselors from both within and outside of North Dakota. It is a great time to get energized for the remainder of the school year and come away with some fresh new ideas to benefit our students.

In addition, Dr. Dan Marrs, North Dakota Career Resource Network, and Kathy Holle, State Supervisor for the North Dakota Department of Career and Technical Education provided an opportunity for us to give direct feedback to the developers of CHOICES, CHOICES Planner, and Career Explorer career planning tools we use at the high school. Thanks Dan and Kathy for providing this for North Dakota Counselors. It ultimately benefits our students.
