Leadership Training Opportunities!
North Dakota Boys State and Girls State
Are you interested in leadership? Are you interested in attending a longstanding tradition of leadership and civics training in North Dakota? If so, here is an opportunity for current high school juniors. Yes, right now we are looking to assist junior males and females who would like to attend either North Dakota Boys State or North Dakota Girls State. The American Legion and The American Legion Auxiliary respectively sponsor these. Application forms are posted on the bulletin board outside of my office. Boys State and Girls State both provide citizenship training for the participants.
Three past participants from the summer of 2007 came into Mrs. Robin Doll’s U.S. History class to talk about their experiences at last year’s North Dakota Girls State and North Dakota Boys State. Josh Eddy, Bryce Tellmann, and Breanna Henke shared some of their experiences and the benefits of attending Girls State and Boys State. Governor John Hoeven attended Boys State as a high school junior. Young John Hoeven was elected Governor of North Dakota Boys’ State when he attended as a high school junior.

Thanks to Josh Eddy, Bryce Tellmann, and Breanna Henke for sharing their experiences and what the benefits are of attending.
The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) will be conducted May 30-June 1, 2008 at Bismarck State College. HOBY is limited to high school sophomores. HOBY was founded by actor Hugh O’Brian 50 years ago as a result of Hugh’s visit with Dr. Albert Schweitzer in Africa. Hugh wanted to do something that would help inspire youth to become positive leaders to make the world a better place.
There is a $ 150.00 charge to attend HOBY. In most years, we are able to find a local business to help cover half of the cost. Last year’s New Salem High School HOBY participants were Desirae Lennie and Laura Kunkel. If you have questions, please ask one of them.

Thanks to Krystyl McManus for coming into Mrs. Robin Doll’s classroom to share her experiences of attending both HOBY and the North Dakota Youth Leadership Seminar. Krystyl also provided the students with a slide show of some of last years’ HOBY activities. Krystyl is a sophomore majoring in psychology at Jamestown College.
North Dakota Youth Leadership Seminar
The North Dakota Youth Leadership Seminar (NDYLS) is being conducted at the University of Mary from May 30-June 1, 2008. The NDYLS provides a leadership training opportunity for sophomores from across North Dakota. There is no cost for students to attend. If your son or daughter is a sophomore and is interested, please have them contact me as soon as possible so that they can be considered for this great experience. Heather McManus was last year’s NDYLS participant from New Salem High School. If you have any questions, please contact Heather. Who will attend this year? It could be you!
If you have any questions on career, counseling, or assessment topics, please contact me at either New Salem High School at 843-7610, or at my residence at 222-3222.
Have an excellent academic day!
