New Salem & Hebron High Schools
New Salem and Hebron High Schools have switched from CHOICES CD (a career development software program) located on the high school computer system to the new Internet version called Choices Planner. We also again subscribe to Choices Explorer (a career exploration website). Both of these are accessible via the Internet at http://www.bridges.com . This year TestGEAR is being provided to us free of charge at the same website.
To access this website, a student needs to go to http://www.bridges.com, select the login page, and type in the site ID number and the password. The site ID and passwords are the same as last year. During the month of March, I will be distributing the Site ID and the passwords to all students in grades 7-12. Parents are encouraged to use this website with their students. This article describes some of the features of this website.
Choices Planner is an Internet based program that offers many of the same features that that CHOICES CD offered. However, because it is Internet based, students in grades 7-12 can access the program from any computer that has Internet access. As a result, students can also access this during the evenings, weekends, and during the summer from via the Internet. Although Choices Planner offers most of the things that CHOICES CD did, Choices Planner has a completely different look.
Choices Planner provides a student with access to many things including: an interest inventory; a basic skills survey; career finder; school finder; scholarship finder; a portfolio; and more. Results of the interest inventory and basic skills survey provide students with a list of occupations that match up to the interests and aptitudes of the student. So for someone who doesnít know where to begin in the career decision-making process, this is a good place to start.
A student can also find out information on many occupations as well as related occupations. In addition, web sites are provided for finding out more information concerning various occupations. Choices Planner also provides a list of colleges/universities from across the United States which provide various majors. The college search can be limited to one or more states selected by the user.
In addition, Choices Planner also provides many additional options including but not limited a portfolio system that can help a student keep track of student work on Choices Planner.
Choices Explorer (formerly known as Career Explorer) is also accessible on the Internet for New Salem students at the http://www.bridges.com website. Some of the features of Career Explorer are: Career Quiz; Major Finder; majors related to school subjects; This Weeks Highlights; Ask Faith; Your Portfolio; and more.
TestGEAR contains some test preparation courses for the ACT and SAT, college preparation information, and financial aid information. We were given access to TestGEAR free of charge for this school year. If you use it, please give me some feedback as to its usefulness in helping us decide if we want to pay for it next year.
