Seniors should have already applied for college scholarships. These normally are applied for by completing a college scholarship form either at the same time as application is made to the college or shortly thereafter. Some colleges begin awarding academic scholarships December 1st. Many other scholarship deadlines are on or around March 1st. So, if a senior is planning on attending college and hasn’t yet completed a scholarship application for the college they are planning to attend in the fall of 2006, a college scholarship application should be completed and mailed immediately.
There are many scholarships that seniors can apply for. I just posted the 16th scholarship list for this academic school year on the bulletin board outside my office. I post several and students are welcome to pull one off of the bulletin board. I also frequently distribute this list to seniors when I visit either Mr. VanderWal’s American Government Classroom or Mrs. Gilstad’s English classroom. This list of scholarships consists of scholarships primarily for seniors. On occasion there are scholarships for juniors, sophomores, freshmen, and sometimes for students in grades 7 and 8 too.
Many scholarship deadlines have passed and some students have applied for some of them. Here is a sample of some of the scholarships that are currently available to be applied for:
Associated General Contractors of North Dakota
The application deadline is April 1, 2006. The scholarship award is between $ 400 and $ 750. This scholarship is for a 12th grade student with a college major in construction, surveying, estimating, or civil engineering. Preference will be given to a member of St. Pius Catholic Church who is planning on attending the University of Mary. If both criteria are not met, the Berger family will choose from those who apply. Some of the selection criteria are: GPA, class rank, ACT, activities, goals, and special circumstances.
Although Mr. Berger attended school in New Salem many years ago, he and his family want to assist someone in attending post-secondary education. Thanks to the Berger family.

Helping students apply for and receive scholarships is one of the top 25 things I like about my job. It is great to hear a student tell me that he/she was awarded a scholarship. It is students getting paid for doing a good job in school. Yes!
