National Certified Career Counselor
New Salem & Hebron High Schools
After digging half of the potato crop from our garden and spending some time weeding in the garden, it feels good to sit down to write my first article for the new school year. It brings back memories and gives me a little bit of a feel for working with the dirt as I did as a kid on my parent’s ranch/farm. Although I didn’t get to haul thousands of idiot blocks (those small rectangular bales weighing somewhere between 30 and 100+ pounds) this summer, I did get plenty of exercise biking, fishing, gardening, lawn work, etc.
Yes, being outside in the fresh air helped me to feel rejuvenated and ready to head back to school. From what I was able to see this past week, most of the students are ready for school too.
I hope students are thinking of their future careers. I know some are as this summer I again received a few e-mails and phone calls related to career planning from students and parents. It was great to hear from them.
In addition to individual, small group career work and classroom presentations on career related issues; I also plan to again arrange job shadow experiences for interested juniors and seniors. All interested students need to do is decide on an occupation and to pick out a day on which to do the job shadow. I will find a person in that occupation they can job shadow. Job shadowing is great as it provides the student with an opportunity to observe someone in that occupation and get a better idea of what having a career in that occupation is like.
Another component I plan continuing – thanks to feedback from my Career Development Advisory Committee – is to have a career speaker in once a month to share information about their career. I arrange for these speakers to come in to speak in a teacher’s classroom. Any interested high school students – in grades 9-12 – can sign up in the office with Mrs. Becker and get a pass from their teacher to come and listen to the speaker. Thanks to New Salem High School students for completing the “Career Speaker Survey” last year.
I hope all the 2006 graduates are either enjoying their first year in college or looking forward to their jobs each day. If you are one of the graduates from this year or some previous year and if you’re not happy with where you are, please stop by to see me. I look forward to assisting you with any career planning needs you may have.
