Field of Dreams!

After winding down from a 30 mile bike ride, gazing at my wife’s flowers in her garden, and wondering how New Salem High School students are feeling about heading back for school, I thought it was a good time to write an article.
This summer I was able to realize one of my goals - “Field of Dreams.” While visiting Karl – our son – in Cedar Rapids, Iowa this summer, we drove to Dyersville, Iowa. We then followed the signs on the North side of town due east to the movie location of “Field Of Dreams.”

The field looked like in the movie. As scheduled on the last Sunday of the month, 8 ball players emerged from the corn and onto the field. They selected some young people from the audience to come to the plate and bat. Spectators lined up in lawn chairs and sat in the bleachers along the first and third baselines to watch. There was considerable banter among the ballplayers as some of them wore wireless microphones. It was a very interesting performance by all: baseball players, young people from the crowd, and spectators.

I hope that students and parents are ready to realize their “Field of Dreams” this coming school year. One’s dreams can come true by developing a good plan and working that plan. Some people say it’s not really a plan unless it is written. I think that there is a better likelihood of a plan succeeding if it is written. It seems more real. Of course, plans can be changed as we change our minds.

I’m sure some New Salem students were thinking of coming back to school. I sure was when I was that age. In fact, I think about it even at my age. I hope that each of us think about our future. Even at my age I contemplate and discuss some of my future options and what I still want to accomplish in life. Sometimes discussing these plans and some potential outcomes helps us to refine those plans and they become more realistic.

I hope that New Salem students discuss their career goals with their parents, teachers, friends, and relatives. This can result in more meaningful and better thought out career plans. As we make more sense of what we want to accomplish in life, more meaning can be seen between the relationship of school and our futures. Education is the key that unlocks the doors to the future. This applies to all of us whether it is K-12 education or some post-secondary education.

I hope the graduates of the Class of 2007 are either enjoying their first year in college or their jobs. If you are not happy with what you are doing, please stop in to see me. I look forward to assisting you with your career planning.

Oh yes, I too was able to not only play catch with my son on the “Field of Dreams” diamond, but I was also able to bat with my son pitching. If you go through Dyersville, Iowa consider visiting “Field of Dreams!”
