5th in the State!
Yes, New Salem Public School had a 7th grade student take 5th in the North Dakota State Spelling Bee! Out of about 100 county and runner-up county representatives, Anna was one of the top 25 spellers who advanced from the written round to the oral spelldown. These 25 top spellers had to walk to a microphone, repeat the word the spelling pronouncer gave them, and then proceed to spell the word. Once the final oral spelldown is reached, tension is so great it can be cut with a knife.
Anna represented New Salem Public School very well. This is the highest that a New Salem Public School student has done in the 17 years that I have been affiliated with the State Spelling Bee. Anna can compete one more year. Congratulations Anna Bernhardt!
