ACT
Last month I distributed ACT Registration Packets to the seniors in Mr. Feist's Senior English class. The ACT is required by North Dakota Colleges and Universities. Some college programs have minimum ACT scores for acceptance into various programs. In addition, the ACT is used for proper course placement for incoming freshmen.

This year the cost of taking the ACT is $ 29.00. In addition, the ACT Plus Writing Exam is an additional $ 14.00. Total cost for taking both tests is $ 43.00. It is important to check with the individual college as to whether or not the ACT Plus Writing is required by the college the student is planning to attend. If a student is not certain as to whether or not to take the ACT Writing Test, I recommend the student take the ACT Writing Test the first time the student takes the ACT.

The above costs for taking the ACT apply provided the ACT Registration Packet is mailed by the regular registration postmark deadline. If the registration packet is mailed during the late registration deadline, the cost for taking the ACT increases by an additional $ 18.00.
Students can also go online to http://www.actstudent.org to register for the ACT.

What is the ACT?
The ACT assists students in college planning. It consists of 4 tests: reading, English, mathematics, and science reasoning. Beginning in 2005, the ACT also contains an optional Writing Test. Some colleges require the ACT Writing Test and some do not.

For What is the ACT Used?
In North Dakota the ACT is used for admission to college. In some North Dakota colleges the ACT is also used for admission to particular programs within the college. The ACT also is used for the majority of scholarships whether it is from college scholarships or from non-college scholarship sources. The ACT also includes an aptitude test component for assisting the student in identifying possible occupations based on a student's interest areas.

What Are the Benefits of a High ACT Score?
The benefits of a high score on the ACT are many. First, colleges use the results for admission to college. Second, some colleges use ACT tests scores in admission to specific programs within the college. Third, most colleges award scholarships based on ACT scores and GPA.
