Summer Academies

Summer academies provide participants with an inside view and hands on experiences as to what various occupations are like within an industry. Summer academies are for students who are not sure what they would like to do after high school or would simply like to have a terrific learning experience this summer. North Dakota Tech Prep, the North Dakota State Board for Career and Technical Education, some business and industry groups and others have collaboratively developed summer academies that can help students in their career planning process.

Most summer Academies offer:
• 1/2 high school credit
• Low cost for the participant – a few academies pay the student
• Opportunities to learn from those working in the particular occupation

Some 2005 Summer Academies

Electronics/Telecommunications Academy
An Electronics/Telecommunications Academy will be held at Bismarck State College from June 6-10 and 13-17, 2005. Current high school sophomores and juniors who are accepted and complete the program will receive 1/2 high school credit and could receive up to $ 250. Students will stay in a dormitory at Bismarck State College and their lodging and meals will be provided. The application deadline is April 15, 2005.

Manufacturing Engineering Academy
This academy will be held at Dickinson High School and will assist students learn about various occupations in the manufacturing industry in western North Dakota. Field trips will be included to various manufacturing sites. Current sophomores and juniors can apply for this career academy that runs from May 31 – June 3 and June 6 – 10, 2005. Students are responsible for their own transportation, lodging, & meals. The application deadline is April 18, 2005.

Culinary Arts Academy
This academy runs from June 6 – 10 and June 13 - 17, 2005. High school students also earn 1/2 a high school credit. Classes are conducted at Bismarck High School. The application deadline is April 22, 2005. Participants get to eat the fruits of their efforts - yum!

Business Challenge
Business Challenge will be held July 10-15, 2005 at Dickinson State University. Business Challenge is North Dakota’s week-long, action-packed, entrepreneurial business camp. Business Challenge provides students and educators with a better appreciation and understanding of business and entrepreneurship. Energy Industry Career Academy
This academy will be at Bismarck State College. About 50% of employees in the energy industry will be retiring in the next 5 to 10 years. Students will have an opportunity to find out if one of these occupations is right for them. Jobs in the energy industry have very good salaries. Room and board is provided for participants. The $ 20 deposit is refunded upon completion of the program. Dates have not yet been set.

Camp Cyber Prairie
This camp is at Valley City State University. Students will experience programming, GPS, Digital imaging, Cyber-Marketing, and more. Classes will be available for various elementary, junior high, and high school categories. Dates and costs for 2005 are not yet available.

Camp; Aerospace Camp; Introduction to Electrical Technology Academy; North Valley Summer Camp; Tech Camp for Girls (entering grades 6, 7, & 8); Introduction to Industrial Electronics and Instrumentation; and more.
